Echo Incursion 01 - Jurassic Gateway (August 10th, 2016)

It's a particularly hot day in the Gateway City zoo. What else could you expect? It's not like it's not to be expected, it is the middle of August, after all. But there's plenty of things to see here at the zoo, and the visitors' center is air conditioned well enough.

Just a normal summer day in a typical summer vacation spot. Right?

Well, that's when things change. Those in the visitor's center would find the building changing around them. There's suddenly a dinosaur skeleton in the middle of the place, with the banner "When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth" hanging from the ceiling.

That's not all. The animal enclosures are now different. What used to be a pen for the african elephants now has very large, very long necked reptiles in it. A gigantic, meat-eating dinosaur just tromped its way out of the lion habitat it's too much too large for, and unfortunately for the people around it, its vision is based on movement. The monkey house? Well, those are velociraptors breaking out of it. The aviary? Now filled with particular aggressive flying pterosaurs.

These are just some of the creatures making their sudden emergence, and it's not long until they spill out of the zoo and into the city proper. Dinosaurs are now walking the streets of Gateway City.

Yes, indeed. Just a normal summer day.

As Mina walks down the street to the movie theater (a girl's got to get her exercise, okay), an unfamiliar scent drifts into her nose. She's still unused to the new sense of scent she's got, but it's full of novel experiences. Sniffing, she tries to figure out what it is. And then she turns around and sees the velociraptors stalking her. She freezes up at first. But then she bolts, the velociraptors hot on her track. Dinosaurs. Why'd it have to be dinosaurs now. This was even worse than the slime!

(Also alright with NPCing the dinosaurs myself.)

Out of nowhere, a blur with red lightning smacks into one of the raptors chasing Mina, throwing it into one of the others in its pack. Then, the speedster rushes in front of her while the beasts hiss in confusion.

"Are you alright?" the man asks, his voice distorted and his face concealed by a yellow ski mask.

What's this guy? A superhero? But when he asks her if she's alright, she immediately responds with her complaints. "No, I'm not alright! There're dinosaurs! They tried to eat me!"

At least she's healthy enough to complain. She doesn't look hurt.

Meanwhile, the raptor pack recovers enough to cautiously creep up, spreading out in an attempt to encircle the two humans. They're wary now, but they haven't given up yet.

Weller made an annoyed sound, only responding with a "tch". He meant that in the sense of whether or not she'd been hurt, but he couldn't exactly dwell on that now.

"Stay back," he commanded, before speeding towards the dinosaurs, intent on delivering a high speed punch to their heads... but his speed faltered, and he stumbled to a stop, only managing to strike one of them.

The one dinosaur that got struck staggered back, but the others sprung at Weller... only to suddenly smack snout-first into a curved blue force field. They shook their heads in confusion and mild hurt.

"Take that!" Mina said with satisfaction. She had recovered enough from her panic to remember that she had a force field.

And that gave Weller the opening he needed. In a flash (heh), he felt his speed return to him, and he rushed forward, delivering a high speed strike to the raptor's lower jaw.

The raptor was promptly knocked upwards, flying hard against the force field. But the others, after some initial scrabbling at the force field, made their way around it, since it didn't completely block off the road.

This time, Weller saw them coming. He rushed back and forth between the raptors, trading high speed blows towards them (or trying to at least), before he felt another ebb in his speed and used the opportunity to dash back towards where Mina was.

Hopefully he'd managed to hurt them enough; he should, though, as at that speed his punches would feel like the swing of a very large hammer.

The raptors that didn't go down seemed to lose their courage, as they withdrew rapidly, leaving the knocked out ones on the sidewalk and road.

Mina took another closer look at her rescuer. Yuck, his outfit was so tacky. It's like he's a criminal! But she was grateful enough to manage at least a "Thank you."

"It's no trouble," Weller said, turning towards her. Then... he actually puts his hands on his hips, looking pointedly up at the sky. "It's all in a day's work."

Yes.

Yes, he just did that.

"Oh my god! Did you really say something that cliche?" Yeah, that cliche was so bad she just can't help but react to it despite her gratitude.

She does pause though. "Well thanks again, though."

Hmph. Life literally rips events out of a comic book, and you can't get away with making a cornball line? Weller resents that a little.

But no, he won't dwell on that. He'll simply shove it into a mental box for now.

"It's no trouble. Now, you get somewhere safe, alright?"

[dictator_ko]

"I'm gonna just get home and shut myself up until all this dinosaur stuff goes away."

And she begins walking toward home.
