All it took was once or twice before is imagination blew it up into something huge. Besides, there's more going on here than just that, he just has no way of really properly expressing it.
Richard just receives a glum nod, as much as he'd like to run off on his own and disappear entirely there's a part of Tony that doesn't completely want to lose his family again.
