[action - private, set on August 4th]

Edwin Weller had been immersed in the study of slime for over a week. Collecting it. Categorizing it, based on level of contact with other substances. Analyzing it under a microscope. Seeing what other people were saying about it. He had help from his assistant in all these things, of course, but he had been giving it a certain amount of... undue focus.

Of course, he wasn't the only one who had been doing so, and that too was frustrating. Scientists from all over the world had been collecting the stuff, making statements about their findings and effectively beating Weller to the punch. It seemed his Numbered status didn't exactly afford him much of an advantage in the field of discovery.

... Except for one.

Weller had been making an effort to avoid touching the samples, both out of fear of contaminating them and due to what he'd learned from other people touching them. But now, now he was at the end of his study, and this was the last, truly unique thing he could learn and gain from this study. Thus, he had prepared two individual samples, two balls of slime, and set them out before him.

Then, Weller touched them.

Instantly, both of the samples changed, becoming different pieces of technology. One was a security camera, which... honestly, Weller had no reaction to. The other was a headset, and the moment he stared at it, triggered an echo in Weller's mind. He gripped the table as a memory flooded back into his mind, of Wells admitting his own hubris and his attempts to encourage the young man called Barry Allen against a powerful foe.

"Run, Barry, Run."

Weller repeated those words from his memory, and smiled at the feeling of nostalgia it inspired in him. His previous life clearly had secrets and many flaws, but he was also seemed to be a friend and a mentor. They were not so different at all.

... But he had a job to do. Quickly, Weller set to studying both samples. Later, he'd discover that the camera reverted back to its gelatinous state, while the headset remained in its new form.

Hello everyone. Many of you don't know me yet, but my name is Doctor Edwin Weller, and I'm a scientist. I'm pleased to be among you, and I'm hoping we can begin a relationship of mutual cooperation.

I don't know if any of you noticed, but the slime that appeared approximately a week and a half ago seems to have spontaneously disappeared. The samples my assistant and I gathered have all vanished, despite being sealed and stored, and I've been unable to find anymore in the "wild" so-to-speak. It seems that it's all gone.

In light of that, I'd like to share with you all the findings of my study.

First of all, most individuals studying the slime immediately found, and stated, that it's composed of the microbe organism that appeared after the alien invasion. Unfortunately, I cannot take credit for that, and this whole exercise has not brought me any closer to determining their origin.

That being said, I can give perspective on what happens after they come in contact with one of the Numbered. I experimented on two samples, and caused each of them to transform. One triggered an Echo and the other did not. After a certain period of time, the one that didn't trigger an echo reverted back to its gelatinous state, and subsequently disappeared with the rest of my samples.

The item that triggered the echo, however, remains, and has shown no sign of disappearing. My analysis of it shows that it has undergone a complete transmutation, in that it is no longer composed of any microbes and is an object of inorganic matter. It is as if it were never "a ball of slime" to begin with.

Before yester, any echoes that bestowed items possessed by my previous self have caused an item to be spontaneously generated as if out of thin air. I've yet to see something become something else until now. If any of you have experienced such a thing, I'd appreciate it if you could share it with me.

Aside from all of that, I also did a test to see what would happen if the "slime" were blown up. All it did was cause the substance to split, and it showed no signs of damage. That being said, I believe I can bring this little report to a close.

Well... for us, at least. More or less. So long as hell isn't raining down from the sky, we've been able to handle most other things.

The thing is, it's entirely scientific. These things ran in patterns before... even if this doesn't really match up to our past experiences. Not fully. Before, things were usually more... isolated.

Which only begs the question of what else this could mean. The effects and things that happened before... there was always a rhyme or reason, but it could take awhile to figure out what that was.

It feels so much like I'm back at square one again. It's... kind of frustrating, honestly.

[Blink. Stare.]

Uh... I guess you're a glass half full sort of guy, huh?

...I suppose that's a good point. You can't get anywhere if you're expecting failure, right?

[Unconsciously, Lily reaches up and rubs her right shoulder. A nervous habit, one she's never quite shaken in the two years since that one horrible injury in Las Vegas.]

No, I... I understand that just fine, sir.

Right, heh. [She smiles weakly.] I didn't mean to imply anything bad, I've just... run into my fair share of things.

[Which he knows, of course, if he actually read that book.]

...okay, that's a point.

[She brushes her hair back and sighs.] You know, it's weird - I put it out there, but it's still odd to hear people say stuff like that.
