Her silence is immediately concerning, and her answer makes his heart sink. Lazarus swallows, but doesn't avert his eyes; that would make it seem like he was lying and couldn't stand to look at her. He wants to avoid giving that kind of impression, if at all possible.

"You look like you went through something horrible," he admits, "but you're alive, and nothing looks better than that, OK?"
