Not outright lifting him up off the ground doesn't mean he's not going to get a firm arm around the young man to keep him from falling. It's the best way, he thinks, to make sure that they actually make it up any stairs with a minimum amount of fuss.

"Just keep your eyes on the stairs. Count 'em."
