Obviously futile, but it made Umi feel better, would hopefully make Reki feel better, and send a little bit of a message to Keldek. There were many things he could do and say, much he could ask of Umi - but she'd protect Reki, and didn't want any unrealistic expectations placed on her. Even the smile couldn't really hide the entirety of how little of an impression she left on him. Better, maybe, in the long run.
